Varun Gandhi : Emerging as बालासाहेब ठाकरे - 2

Varun Gandhi was born to Sanjay Gandhi and Maneka Gandhi on March 13, 1980 in New Delhi. He was only 2 month old when his father passed away in a plane crash. Varun was exposed to politics from an early age as his mother, Maneka, was politically active since his birth. In February 2004, he joined the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) along with his mother Maneka after being convinced to do so by BJP general secretary Pramod mahajan. In November 2004, he was inducted into the BJP national executive.
In January 2008, it was the report in media that his mother Maneka will vacate her six-time constituency of Pilibhit in Uttar Pardesh for Varun during the 2009 elections to give him a solid political start, while she will contest from neighboring Anwla BJP decided to field Varun Gandhi from the Pilibhit Lok sabha seat for general election 2009.

His Controversial Speach

  • At a meeting in Dalchand locality on March 6, 2009, he allegedly said :
"If somebody lifts a hand against Hindus Hindus, or thinks they are weak, there is nobody behind them, then I swear on the Bhagvad Gita(Hindus's holy book) that I will cut off that hand"

  • At the same rally, he is supposed to have said :
"All the Hindus stay on this side and send the others to Pakistan. This is the Lotus hand, it will cut their throats after elections."


  • He also made some derogatory remarks against Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi.

  • The Election Commission of India asked the Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh, to file a case under IPC and Representation of the People Act against Varun Gandhi and issued a notice to him for violation of election Model Code of Conduct.
  • On 29 March, Varun Gandhi surrendered before the local court in Pilibhit , after his anticipatory bail expired in the presence of a large number of supporters. He was arrested and jailed
  • On 30 march 2009 , he was granted bail in the case against him for the violation of code of conduct but still remains behind Bars as he also faces charges under the stringent National Security Act (NSA). A court in Pilibhit granted bail to the young leader in two cases filed against him for allegedly communal and inflammatory speeches he made in the run-up to the elections and violence by his supporters when he was arrested on Saturday.
  • This 20 days drama still continue and results wit the announcement that Varun Gandhi, will be candidate from Pilibhit on the ticket of BJP.
